I found a bullet casing near an old home, which has been submerged in a lake for about 40 years. It is a 2 inch long brass casing marked with the letters rem- umc and 38-55.
I know what the marking stand for, but have no idea of the possible dates.... ?
Anyone help me with this??

REM-UMC was formed in 1912 when Remington joined with UMC co (Union Metallic Cartridge co). REM-UMC is still around today, but the 38-55 round was most popular from the 1880's until around 1978 when a more modern shell tried to replace it called the .375, but older guns would take 38-55 cartridges the best, and .375 cartridges were considered "unsafe" in those older guns, so 38-55 were still used in them. That means your casing most likely is from 1912 until around 1978.
