Here is a site I visited today out in the woods of our hunting lease. There were several derelict pieces of equipment within the foundation walls of one of the buildings. I believe that it was most likely the barn or workshop due to it's size and the presence of the machinery. The whole site was very overgrown and most of my time today was spent hacking with a machete and clearing the ground of the numerous tin pieces all over the ground, presumably this building's roof. While clearing the tin pieces I was quite startled when I noticed this very large black snake a couple of feet away from me which was sunning itself on a branch. I watched for a moment as it slinked away under one of the remaining pieces of tin that I had yet to clear away. Needleess to say, the snake's home remained where it sat and I gave him his distance. After about a half day of clearing and a small amount of detecting I called it a day. What do you guys do in sites like these? Hit them in the winter? Weedeater? Brushhog? I don't think I will be tackling a site like this in the immediate future without a better plan of attack.

I would guess 1920's or earlier..I remember back in the 50's on my uncles farm he had really old farm implements with iron wheels and had originally been used with a team of horses

Black Rat Snake... AKA: Black Snake. Harmless, unless you are a rat! Thanks for NOT killing the poor little rascal.

Most of us would wait for winter to kill the plants back. I have "seen" people use weed eaters, Roundup and lawn mowers to clear spots. I have used a rake more than once, to get the big stuff out of the way.

I agree with Normsel, early 1900s, on the farm implements.

Best of luck to you!

Okay, that lines up with my research. Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah I wouldn't kill the snake. I knew it was a good one. He just startled me a bit when I stumbled upon him.

If that's your property or you have permission to keep whatever you find, I'd try to get a truck/trailer back there and haul that piece out. Someone would love to buy that "yard art" from you! :laughing7: Spring time before the bugs and blooms would be my pick of when to detect that area.

It is on our hunting lease. The location is very remote and heavily wooded. I believe it is there to stay. There are many more pieces like it out there.
