My great-aunt gave me this over 20 years ago. She married a Pima Indian in Arizona. She told me that his family gave it to her as a wedding gift. She has passed away since then. I wondered if anyone here could tell me more about this mortar.

Afternoon,

A little west for me, but its a mortar or metate for grinding probably corn. You are missing the roller pestle or mano which would have been used to grind the corn in a rolling motion back and forth on your matate. Looks to be made of volcanic rock. They come in varied sizes...some are rounder, yours is of the flatter variety. I have linked a picture of something similar.

I cannot tell from the photo how old your piece...someone more familiar might could ascertain that. If I were to guess I would say it was not an ancient piece, but that is only a guess.
Maybe someone that is more knowledgeable on western artifacts will chime in.

Happy Hunting.
