Can I slab my holed IHP 'find'? (pic)

I acquired this coin at a fantastic price. I was wondering if anyone knew if could have it graded? Will PCGS take holed coins? I checked their site but they didn't specify at least not that I could find.

Any experts out there know how holes affect a coins value? Any estimates of the value for this one? The headband has a pretty nice bold "Liberty".

If I'm in the wrong section, please let me know or move me. I'm learning so don't freak out on me :)

Thanks,
Jason

PCGS won't grade a damaged coin. As to value, if it is not rare or a key date, cut it in 1\2 and then some. This is just my own guide I use. I've sent coins to PCGS and from what you have here, a nice piece of history, but thats about it. I hope you didn't pay too much.

Thanks for that info. Nah, I got it cheap. I think I may make a necklace since it already has a hole. Hate to see a good coin ruined like that.

Appreciate you sharing the 'half the value' rule of thumb. I'll check that as I go but it's sounds right to me also.

Best of luck,
Jason

$45 is a profit. I appreciate that opinion. I may sell it if I can get that for it. Any opinions on the grade? Extra Fine!

I beleive Anacs will slab problem coins. Unless this coin has sentimental value I wouldn't do it. Its kinda expensive. If youre just doing one coin I would expect to pay about $40 to get it slabbed.

Thanks, I seemed to think it was only $15 per coin, but I've submitted coins for grading. I appeciate that info.

I submitted 2 coins for slabbing a couple months ago. With shipping, insurance, and variety research the total was almost $70.

Re: Can I slab my holed IHP 'find'? (pic)

Hi Jason

The 1867 IH is one of the lower minted coins (9 million) and so they are relatively scarce... but not in the same category as the 1877 is in (less than 1 million)

I found a 1867 Indian head in about the same condition as yours except no hole, unfortunately the coin has a lovely green patina upon it. It is the only 1867 IH that i have found thus far so i am hanging on to it just in case it turns out to be the only or the best that i ever find.

Thanks for sharing your picture

I have to ask, why would you suggest cutting it in half?
Did i missunderstand your post or is there something i haven't heard of?

Bradyboy...I believe he meant cutting the stated value of the coin in half, not cutting the coin itself in half...

Re: Can I slab my holed IHP 'find'? (pic)

i got some out awhile back to anacs for 12.00, plus insu, shipping both ways. if u like the coin and u found it, i think it would be a kick A$$ idea to slab it, not everyone has the pleasures of finding any old coin, and someone else thought the coin was cool enough to wear around thier neck, so why not slab it???
my first old coin was a 2 centavos, and it was holed.

Re: Can I slab my holed IHP 'find'? (pic)

The only real reason to slab a coin is for grading purposes. Grading can be very subjective, and opinions vary, slabbing takes a lot of the guess work out. Unless you have a nice coin with a good numismatic premium, there is no real reason to slab a coin, just put it in a 2X2.

Re: Can I slab my holed IHP 'find'? (pic)

thats true wayne, but its a good feeling holding a slabbed coin reguardless of its value, a better "feel" than 2x2's
