Hey guys found this copper coin today. I am clueless! Used 40X magnification on it and I can see the letters CE. Im guessing CENT of some kind. There is also the letter O above the CE. Im thinking ONE (ONE CENT.) Along with some decorative leave branches. This coin isn't perfectly round either it almost has a octagon shape to it. Looks hand made. There is a large X punched on one side.

Does anyone know why someone would punch the X on the coin? Hopefully someone can figure this coin out. Those are all the clues I have.

Thanks!

Sure looks like an early US Large One Cent to me. Yeah, someone was really messing with it. I don't know if you'll ever get the TYPE off it, someone with more knowledge may know, but there is something really neat about it otherwise. Looks like they deliberately took a file to the edges and squared it off a few places. That actually makes it a lot more interesting. Great find. Lots of character.

Pretty cool! The coin was only minted for 11 years! Wondering if it was a Blacksmith coin/token...???

you know what they say... X marks the spot! If I were you I would go back to the exact spot you found that coin and get a back hoe and dig down about 20-30 ft. There will definitely be treasure there!

On a serious note great find! I found my first counter stamped large cent a couple months ago! It definitely makes the find a little better in my book!
