In gold jewelry, chlorine can and will react with the silver, nickle, and copper mixed with the gold. Chlorine may react with electrum, but for the most part your nuggets are safe.

Muriatic Acid mixed with Bleach (Chlorine) will dissolve gold producing Gold Clorate.
