So my buddy was doing some yard work and unearthed these. One pic is of all of the ones found so far. He asked me to sweep the yard and try to find more. I don’t have measurements and weights yet as I won’t have my hands on them til tomorrow. One pic is the cleanest one next to a softball for reference. 5F711E6B-4078-424D-B366-6ADDF90E3452.jpeg C43C9A61-5134-4520-ADF5-CA9C70A17AC5.jpeg

Yes! That is a 6 pound cannon ball. Are you around any civil war sites? If so I’d hit that area hard with a detector.

Well yes , but not the way most people think. I’m in far west Texas. We did have some civil war action, but very limited. However we have a military base here established in 1849-present.

Definitely search the area well. That’s an awesome find. I live on a battle field and I can’t wait to find some cannon balls!

Just curious as to how you can tell they are not mill balls without weight and diameters?

Be sure to weigh and measure them to make sure. The cleaned one you posted with the softball looks out of round, which COULD be an indication of a mill ball. I hope you did find a mess of 6-pdrs.

I agree, could be mill balls or anything else. But there are no old factories or industrial sites any where near. But this neighborhood sits on what used to be the Ft.Bliss artillery range. So I’m really hoping the are cannonballs! I’ll post an update when I get the measurements . Thanks for the input guys

Nice finds! Measure their diameter with a vernier and weigh each ball, then compare with standard size cannon balls, Good Luck on your research! :occasion14:
