I’ve found dozens of cap gun, all pot metal variety. This has a heavy brass frame and the barrel area was a glob of iron. ?

Definitely real, derringer or possibly boot pistol. Iver Johnson made a bunch of cheap top break revolvers in small calibers. They must have been the Saturday night specials of the time. most were nickel plated.

Yup, spur trigger pocket revolver... could be any of a dozen makers. Cleaned up and a good pic of the shape of the side plate can help narrow down who made it
