When I was a kid we called them "star apples" and would occaisionally steal a few as we walked home from school.

They are pretty sour tasting. :P I don't like 'em,I think it's definetely an acquired taste. :)

There is actually 2 different varieties,one is sweet and one is sour (more common).No,the branches (it's a tree) aren't purple,that's me trying to edit the photo to make it look a little better. A photographer I am not! :)

I would imagine if you sliced it would be star shaped.
