Hi folks, been working on this for awhile. Home made scoop.
Want to know of your opinion.
Intended for dry sand, someone said it could be used in water so I made a hollow handle for flotation.
Have a cheap water detector so will try that.
Comments are welcome.
Thanks for replies.

Looks good

The handle isn't PVC pipe is it? Also you may want to add a small piece of metal the goes from the bottom of the basket to the handle for support while you dig.

Well, I guess it shouldent be? but it is pvc.. :icon_scratch:
and there is a solid bar of it between the bottom and top parts.
maybe if I drilled them out I could add metal there but I didn't want
any metal at all in it so I could see if my treasures were in there.
Hope to get to the beach this weekend and see if I can break it.

Nice looking scoop. I would recommend a foot step also even for dry sand. You want to take the pressure off of the handle part where it connects to the scoop. I had a metal one without the footstep and each time I pushed it in it put pressure on the part where it connected to the scoop. Eventually it bent and broke.

While it looks great, I to believe your going to snap it. Maybe a larger piece of PVC outside of that one. Once your in the water, that sand is much more dense, compact and heavier. Nice.

My first scoop I ever had was a PVC scoop and it did well. I think it was probably a little heavier than yours. I used it in the surf with no problems but I was hunting in the panhandle area surf of Florida then and the sand there is like sugar. I used that scoop for about a year with no issues. It was great because I could check the scoop with my detector each time I tried to retrieve an item to see if it was in there. I can't do that with my metal scoop of course. It came in handy when I had small items that fell out of the holes. I could tell exactly where they were in the scoop and place my hand under that section of the scoop as the sand sifted through to catch the small items when they passed through the hole.

If you find you need to reinforce the handle, consider using a wooden dowl to go down through the hollow PVC pipe. That may be enough to strengthen it without having to use metal. That will still allow you to check the scoop with the machine.

Looks great. You shouldn't have much of a hard time with it in dry sand.
