Census maps

Where can you get copies of old census maps. Pre 1920's. I know they exist but I can find any. Where do these guys get them. Online or what. I would be happy to pay for them but I've tried many places locally and the oldest map I've found so far was 1971. Any help would be greatly appreciated

try (the natonal map.com) historical topos, they show old roads and buildings. and they're free to down load

I recently went to my parish (county) courthouse's clerk of court's office and obtained a map of my target area dated 1939. Each property had the name of the owner from that time. They had much older maps but I was pressed for time and couldn't wait.
I'm not sure what you're looking for, but it comes in handy when looking for abandoned homesteads. Good luck!
