Found this in a hole with a key and a 1929 buffalo nickel at our spot in the woods. No idea on its age. 260451_522961737719158_1906106045_n.jpg 546464_522961947719137_1001747840_n.jpg

Anyone know how to date these darn things? Thanks. :)

Well this area has been here with people on it since the copper culture days. The array of finds has been from copper culture pieces up to modern stuff and everything in between. A guy in our club found a 1796 2 reale coin, 2 large cents have been pulled from here as well. One from the 1840's and the one I found was 1852. Tons of silver, mercs, barbers, walkers, bens. Cents, large, indian, wheat, modern.

Nickels, my brother just recently found a V, Buffalo and 1941 Jefferson in the same hole. I think the total so far for older nickels is 6 V's, 6-7 buffs, tons of jefferson of all ages.

I think the key to this is the fact that a railroad runs through the property and has since the 1830's. Not sure though....there is so much stuff there it is hard to hunt it.

You just nailed why that coin was there in your last sentence.......the Rail road. Those Chinese Coins(most date to the 1600's)were brought out here by the thousands, and 100 of them was worth a penny,so it is likely they were good luck, used for barter amongst themselves,or used in the game of Phan Tan.We dig hundreds of them, from the Chinese in the Gold Camps. The chinese built most of the Railroads as well

....I cant help but notice your signature.....Banks should turn away coin roll hunters???Really,Why?I have never,or will never coin roll hunt, but many people get great joy from the hobby including young kids. They are also saving valuable historical coins from destruction as well.I cant comprehend your statement, but then again, your one above that may explain it

Even though it's old, they made so many that their value isn't all that much. You can go into any coin store and find them in their bargain bin. I took one to school as a kid for show and tell (do they still do that?) so it could be a recent drop also and have nothing to do with the railroad but most likely it does.
