It was the rite of passage for the Smith’s 3 year old son Johnny, a long family tradition to see what he would excel at when he grows up. At one end of the long room was a table and on that table were 3 items. The first was the old family bible all worn and tattered, the second was a silver dollar that grandpa carried for a good luck charm, and the third was a shot of whiskey poured from a special bottle that Grandpa kept hid for special occasions.
All the family lined the walls of the room in anticipation, the whispering continued, all eyes fixed on the door waiting for Johnny to come through and show the family what his propensity for life would be. As the door opened Johnny stood there looking at the table at the other end. If Johnny picked up the bible he would be destined to the ministry, if he took the silver dollar he was bound for financial wealth, and if he drank the shot of whiskey his life would be the town drunk.
Well Johnny started to walk and the room grew quite as he got closer and closer to the table. Grandpa smiled and anticipated what Johnny might choose. When Johnny got to the table he flipped the pages on the bible and put it under his arm, he then turned to the silver dollar picked it up and looked at it and slipped it into his pocket. He then strolled over to the whiskey shot and picked it up and downed it in one swoop. About then Grandpa fell to the ground, hands over his face crying, moaning and lamenting, OH MY GOD he is going to be a politician.
