Got out today for a few hours with Vino. After watching him pull that belt plate out two weeks ago, it was now his turn to watch. This beauty was approximately two inches under the ground. My first military belt buckle, I couldn't be happier!

Once I got home, as I began to clean my find (following Vino's instructions to a T), I couldn't help but think of my late father-in-law, who passed away unexpectedly in June. He was a Civil War fanatic. Every year he would travel to Gettysburg, sometimes by himself, to walk Pickett's charge. The family joked that he must have fought and died at Gettysburg in a former life. He would have loved to hold this piece of history. This one is for you Jimbo.

That's a really nice belt plate. Great shape. Must've blown an ear drum at only two inches deep! I probably would've thought it was a Pepsi can! Congrats man, that's awesome.

We had been digging pieces of sheet copper, possibly from gutters or flashing, at 8-10 inches, so yeah, this rang up high and loud, and surprised the hell out of me

That is a fantastic find when you walked over to me and drop that in my hand I almost passed out. That is definitely a banner find for our area they don't come out every day.

Amazing plate PA Sleuth! It cleaned up well and has a really nice patina. Great story about your father-in-law... I've been to Gettysburg 5 or 6 times, specifically to pickets charge and there is something special about that area.

Agreed! I bet it SANG to you. A VERY nice plate . . . and early war, fat-letter puppy-paw, too! Well done.

Congrats on a nice plate! I found my first about a month ago and there is no feeling like it, touching something for the first time in 155 years after 3,000,000 hours of walking around and digging coke cans and pull tabs!

Thank you, Vino said it looked like an early one. For those of us, like myself, who are not as familiar with these plates, can someone tell me the differences, or how you can date them based on their characteristics?

Brad

I walked Pickett's charge with him once, came out covered from head to toe in ticks
