? civil war button

What does the back look like? Thats the best way to id buttons.

The back has the words "BOYLAN MF'G CO. " and "- N.Y. - " going around the edge. There is a stiff, round shank in the middle. Thanks - any help will be appreciated. Terry

Terry, my best guess is a Rhode Island button. There are several listed in Albert's book with the word Hope on them but nothing with the Boylan bm. There was a John Boylan that made buttons from 1864-1880s. Is it 2 piece? Sorry I couldn't be more help but you are right...thats a tough one but a very nice button!

Thats as far as I got too... no exact match.
