Found this today for a dollar. Seems to be in good condition.... Somebody dated this to 1865 and the writing on the front leads to me to believe this is the Civil War. I can't make out the name to whom it is addressed although I can see Lieutenant. 2nd Regiment Ohio Cavalry, 1st Bng. 3rd Cavalry Division, Near Washington D.C. Can anyone make sense of this? Thanks so much!!

Good job 4x4x4 on the stamp ID ! Without knowing the age of the stamp I'd have thought 1860-1870 , just the look of the cursive (and the stamp ) It has the look of circa Civil War . Nice Find !

The first occurance of that image was in the period of 1861 -1862; then reissues in 1867 and 1875.
The value of the stamp depends a lot on its 'grill'.
The value range can be 100X greater for one variety compared to another.
If you are not familiar with the grill of a stamp, this site can be used as a primer: How to find the grill on a stamp
The heavy cancellation mark on the OP's stamp will certainly reduce its value--but still a great find; especially if the addressee can be ID-ed.

The 2nd Regiment Ohio Cavalry, 1st Bng. 3rd Cavalry Division was in the DC area in May of 1865, till the 27th, then marched to Missouri and mustered out in October of '65.
The war ended on May 9th and the postmark looks like a double digit number; so immediately after the war was over--in the same month; perhaps the next day; May 10th.

Outstanding find. I'm with Kurious. Get that baby in a nice frame with acid free glass so it wont fade. It will make a great display.
