Was able to get out digging with my brother last weekend to a new rural fort site for some much needed silence and relic hunting. We stumbled into a little fire pit and while scraping the ink emerged from the side wall in mint condition. Later we sifted up a beautiful Kerosine/Lamp Oil Civil War token. I love the Gettysburg date and patriotic design. Although not rare in the east, its journey west would be a remarkable story. The pit also yielded a canteen stopper clay marble, belt keeper hammered flat, and a few other random iron finds. Later while detecting in heavy iron we popped out some nice brass including eagle coats and a nice infantry cuff. Epaulette pieces, suspender buckles and some bullets rounded out the hunt. Overall a successful start to the season. Thanks for looking and stay dirty.

Seems like you have a killer hunt Evan each time you visit that site. Can't believe that ink came out unscathed in that environment, and that token is incredible. That should be enough of a relic fix to keep you satisfied until the next outing, which hopefully will be soon.

Thanks for all the nice comments. The ink bottle still has the cork in the bottom. Dry conditions and non mineralized soil definitely are kind to brass and glass.

Thanks, I found one of those "Not One Cent" tokens in a Civil War camp. I will look for it and post a pic.

Thanks Steve, hope to hunt with you again one of these days. I still want another shot at Coles Hill, a lot of glass left on that slope.. Good luck with the season.

Very successful on this hunt. Hope you get some more. Love that ink. Do you know if it has a pontil Mark on the bottom?

Not pontiled, mid 1860s but one of my favorite bottles to dig none the less. Despite the size they are so often broken.
