Went out today with a few middle school kids and there teacher whom i met @ the local cw museum this morning too dig some huts and a little history lesson of Stafford,Virginia..

One big hole and few bullets/minis , 1 eagle button, few knapsack stuff and 1 odd looking rock that one of the kids found in the hut.

Best thing I didnt have to fill the hole in left that for the kids but after letting them pull some relics outta the ground it was like they found gold! Was going to give them all the relics but since the bullets are lead they weren't allowed too have them so hopefully I will be able too go to there school and give them some eagle buttons on my day off for the help.

Sounds like a great experience. About 10 years ago I ran an after school metal detecting club for middle school kids. They loved it. Since we couldn't leave the school grounds, I would "plant" some treasures for them to find. It was fun! Come to think of it, there were several silver coins and a handful of wheat cents that were never found. H Digs :)

Yep we gotta get the kids into it or else there won't be anyone left for the next generation of Civil War relic hunting, I sure remember when I started relic hunting when I was in middle school... the kids love it almost as if they are digging for lost treasure well in away we are digging for lost treasure! HH and always take a kid out relic hunting.

It's to bad more kids aren't introduced to this hobby. Unfortunately most all kids now are corrupted by things like MTV, total trash on tv. If their hero's on tv don't say it is cool the kids are afraid to show any interest for fear of being mocked. Sad to see all the blind followers going to waste...

I tell ya what. If I had a metal detector back when I was in school, I would have become a history major for sure! :)

Nothing brings home history more than actually pulling a piece of it out of the ground with your own hands. Read about it in a book and then find a piece referenced in the books, right beneath your feet!

Awesome!! Sitting in a classroom listening to history can't even come close to touching and experiencing it. The wife and I went to Cedar Key on day trip and stood were several major conflicts took place. You really get an appreciation for what happened there. Good post..:)

Tell me about it ! When I was in middle school we had civil war lectures all the time and they would hand out lead bullets too every kid. Not anymore you arent allowed to even bring cw bullets onto school grounds without permission and if you want to bring a Civil War gun to show the kids you have to escorted by a police officer. Welcome to the 21st century!

Ridiculous, isn't it? The nanny state continues to grow ans reach into every aspect of our lives. What little bit of lead the kidw would be exposed tp handling the bullets is laughable. It's also older kids and not little kids they should already know to wash their hands anyways.

thumbs up Hut. i respect a person that not only is willing to step out there and show some one how to do things but teaching kids is always a bonus.
