20191215_123857.jpgI found this sword yesterday and was hoping to confirm it being a U.S cavalry .
I found it on a rock outcrop overlooking the river on my property . it was only in the ground 2'' deep and overloaded my machine with an iron tone.
I took these pic with my phone as soon as I figured out what it was.
I 'm seeking advice on how to clean or preserve it.
keep in mind it is stuck in the scabbard and soaking may not work because it can't be rinsed properly I have it setting in the area of the woodstove in an effort to remove all the moisture.
dig those large iron signals guys , the next one may be something good..DSCN2476.jpg20191215_123549.jpg20191215_122946.jpgDSCN2475.jpg

I've only found some minnie balls and flat buttons . I find more native American points here than relics.

the site is the top of an 80' bluff overlooking the river with rocks the size of your fist up to the size of a car.

from this point you overlook the river and nearby road .

next door is a chimney laid with flat stone and no mortar ,it's very old indeed so maybe the troops went there for food.
I can see falling off a horse on the bluff , it's so steep you can hardly stand up to detect ,It's almost straight up in places .
GPS Coordinates please! :)

That is absolutely amazing!! One of the coolest finds I have seen on here. I would 100% banner if you hadn't already got it!!!

Go back a few pages and see the pics of the sword out of the scabbard . the blade is in real nice shape
I did, and it is one remarkable piece of History from our Civil War.

Fantastic piece of U.S. History- simply amazing- Big time Congrats!

Super Awesome save! Congratulations. That blade is in incredible condition. That is the find of a Lifetime.

Fantastic! I don’t believe anyone has mentioned - could it have been buried with a fallen soldier to honor him? May be worth excavating the area below the sword to see.

My guess would be it's an 1860 Light Cavalry sabre.

Awaiting more info / marks.

Pictures of that pommel (close up).

FOR... I think I may be off on this...

To be honest I have done ZERO researxh on this ... for I was awaiting some details.

I am willing to do so... if I can get these above things.

FOR... after re-reading this thread something struck me while zooming in on the pictures.

I think... MAYBE... I repeat... MAYBE... this may be "eluding" by the pictures.

Bergie , I doubt anyone is buried there as it's very rocky ,steep and no real soil to speak of and if one were to walk another 150 feet the soil runs about 30'' deep and the ground is flat.

And If I did feel it was a grave I sure as heck would not dig it up . I do have a known cemetery where the graves are marked with field stones and shown on the plat for my property . I won't be digging those up either .

AARC , I will post more info after I clean the sword up , life on a farm gets busy at times. thanks very much for the extra interest you've shown in the sword.

it is not the one shown in post 129 as the guard has three " post" not four.
Im cleaning it up at the makers mark and it is very hard to read for the pitting.

Congratulations on an incredible find! I was showing everybody your post (wife, kids, coworkers). Good luck with it. GM

***updated info*** on the sword

Ames MFG Co. other side says U.S J H 186? PITTED
chicopee Mass pommel is marked with JH

All is very faint ,mixed with pitting but that's what I'm seeing..

That is so funny...

I was about to state that it was more likely an Ames. heh

Once you have the sword removed, i would buy a set of baby bottle brushes, and a dowel rod to get down in the scabbard and give it a good cleaning. I wouldnt just let it all dry out. Thats where the damage begins on an item is this state of decay
