I was digging near a foundation earlier today and found what looks to be a civil war era belt plate/buckle. I'm thinking its part of a two piece belt buckle (just need to find another piece) but I'm not quite sure. It looks like it has a shank on the back still. I've tried looking it up but can't find anything. The "S" part of the buckle/plate looks different from the normal U.S. belt buckles I usually see dug on here. It's also rounded and a little bigger then a half dollar. Please let me know what it is!!

My guess would be a Rosette,
Now what the era it would be is another question.
Maybe someone else can ID it better.
Congrats on a great find,But I don't think it is a buckle or a plate.

What exactly is a rosette? You think I should go ahead and clean it? I might leave it alone until I find out what it is exactly...

I appreciate the quick response. I wish someone else would chime in and give an opinion?

any civil war buffs out there with any ideas?

Yes. You found a rosette. I didn't look at the style of the letters very closely, but it may be post-war. (And in fact, I'm leaning in this direction.)

I have one from WWI that is missing the lead backing. It is almost identical.

Best Wishes,

are these worth anything? :) If so, how much?

They are worth what someone would pay for one.
