It does appear to be a hex bolt broken off at the beginning of the thread. Hex bolts were a fairly new technology at the time of the Civil War but were being widely used on machinery and other mechanical equipment. I don't have any idea where it came from. It's not a very big bolt and it was broken, this could be a clue?

It looks like a leveling foot screw off of an old appliance.

This almost favors the zinc stem/base from a Williams Cleaned bullet. Close to the same size, but this piece appears to be iron and the head of the piece a hexagonal shape instead of being round. I wonder if this could be some sort of a variation of a musket screw. Did you say other relics came from the area where this piece was found?
