Excellent job - that's how this works. Provide enough information and it allows anyone to find the same thing. As far as your 3 "problems" go, the FACT that I presented is that there is an 1880 census with a Jacob Waltz with all of the information that's documented there. I'm not claiming it's all factually true - especially when you start doing geneology work and you realize that census takers often get names, dates, ages, etc... wrong.
Your first problem about the gravestone you already answered yourself. I believe the headstone that resides there is not the original one (if there even was an original headstone) and I don't have the foggiest idea if Waltz or anyone else is buried there - and it has no impact whatsoever on the 1880 census information I stated above. I'll try to track down when the current headstone was placed there, but I believe it was a "memorial headstone" placed at some point in the last 20-30 years.
Your second problem about the census taker's name. I don't read script very well as I mentioned in my post, so it could be Ranley, Darbey... ? I have no idea and I stated as such in my post. The fact that he doesn't show up in whatever directory that is you posted that you have no record of has no bearing whatsoever since we have no idea where the census taker lived, just that he signed the census.
Your final problem is hardly a problem at all. I thought it was clear that I was making the assumption that they lived "fairly close to one another," using the power of deductive reasoning that the census taker went there next after Waltz. I have no idea if the homes were right near one another on the property as farms often are where the major portion of acreage usually spreads out behind them and lies adjacent to the next farmers land. On top of that, "living fairly closely" is a subjective term.
And I'm sorry - at this time I don't have any software on the work computer I'm working on to take a decent enough screenshot to make it easy to see. I can do that tonight if you would like.
Now, since we're playing this game... could you do me a favor? Pick any one of these "facts" you stated below and back them up with the same kind of documented evidence I did. Not people's theories, or stories, or guesses, documented evidence...
1) The Lost Dutchman Stole from the Vulture Mine to get his gold
2) The Lost Dutchman Robbed someone or some place to get his gold
3) The Lost Dutchman Killed to get his gold
4) J Waltz was a book publisher
Pick any one of them and enlighten us. If not, at least be big enough to admit the first 3 are only theories AT BEST, and #4 may or may not be the same J Waltz as the one we're talking about here. I would love to discover that he was a book publisher as that would open so many new avenues of research, but unless I have the information needed to put my hands on the same information, it could be anything.
