Me and a buddy hit an old site yesterday that has been used by Texas revolutionary troops thru the civil war to present. The coin like object has a triangle shape in the middle and some writing that we can't figure out on the edge. The coin is just a bit larger than a penny and appears to be silver. The back of the coin looks worn slick by wear.
The hatpin is cut from a 1863 mexican coin....someone sure had alot of time on their hands.
Thanks for any info. Kieth

Hey Keith!

Great looking stuff! Your coin appears to be a Reale made in Mexico. If you look at the picture below of an 8 reale of Mexico.. you'll see the similarities. If you post in the Cobs Section, you might get a better answer!

Great finds and good luck!

Thanks! I guess I now need to find out which denomination it is. It is just a bit larger than a penny.

The top coin is from Mexico and minted during the period called the Republica; during the 1800s . The reverse features the 'radiant Liberty cap' (your 'triangle shape").

If it's 16mm, it's a 1/2 real; 20mm, then a 1 real; 27mm for a 2R. Part of the legend is readable and would show: 10 Ds 20 Gs.

Mexico used the medieval system of dineros and granos to measure the fineness of their coins, twelve dineros designating pure silver with each dinero divided into 24 granos. Your coin of 10 Ds. 20 Gs equated to .902777 fine.
Congrats.

Your stick pin eagle shows a 'facing' versus a 'portrait' eagle. Facing eagles were issued by 14 different mints between 1824 and 1897. From wingtip to wingtip it measured about 18 mm on a 28 mm 2R, for example.

It is very worn. I cleaned it probably for the last time last night.....still pretty slick where the date should be.
