Probably just toned. There's a difference between dirt and toning. You DON'T want to try to make the coin shiny as new. Could you post a pic?

I didn't find a forum for cleaning coins.
I have a 1943 A German 10 pfennig. Made of Zinc I believe.
Please direct me to the proper forum or tell me how to clean it. Zinc turned nearly black.
Thanks, Marvin

You can wash a coin with warm water and detergent, place on a soft cloth and pat dry, but much more than that and you are going to do more damage than help.

Coins that I clean, use a few drops of DAWN LIQUID SOAP in a Rx bottle with hot water, shake and let soak for two days, rinse with hot water & pat dry with paper napkin.
