All I know is it worked for me when I was on a roadtrip and didn't want to carry 30lbs of halves on the plane. Printed out a receipt with no Fee at all and gave me a "gift card" for Home Depot or Lowes (may have been Lowes now that I think about it, I get them confused all the time...). Only thing was the "gift card" was actually just printed on receipt paper with the amount of credit and a bar code/code for the store. I took it to the store and it worked like a champ.

I have noticed that not all of the Coinstar machines offer this. You know on the fee, I would never pay it, but that is how Coinstar makes their money. I see plenty of people using their machines. They are very upfront about the fee. I think they offer a service that some people (not us CRHers) are willing to pay for. I wish I would have thought of it. Of course, I would design my machines to automatically cull all the silver and stuff into a separate bin that only I could access :headbang:

HSH to all and Happy Labor Day. This was a CRH-free weekend for me. Been on a trip with my wife and kids to see our new Grand Nephew and Grand Niece down in Texas. I miss the CRH, but the babies are very cute. Getting back on the road for the 9 hr drive in a minute. Got a bag of halves waiting at home to go thru -- there are silver ones in there, I saw them before we left :tongue3:

My suggestion for the OP is to take $10 in dimes to the local coinstar machine and go through the process of getting a gift card or e-certificate.
You'll be amazed at how simple and straight forward everything is.
Be advised though if you plan on running large amounts of coin in the future the machine is slow. I normally do 3 boxes of zinc leftovers a week which comes out to between 5500 to 5800 zinc for a amazon or lowes e-certificate and it takes 20 to 30 minutes from start to finish.

Does anybody ever use any of the free offers? I can't find a bank with a coin counter in my area, which usually isn't a big deal, but sometimes with bigger orders of nickels or pennies its really inconvenient. So I looked at their offers in my area and im still kinda iffy on it. Opinions?

where do you live?

Phoenix.

also saw where some indian casinos still have free coin cashing

Also I dont know of a single credit union in FL or KY that does not have a coin counting machine. Call a couple and see what you find

See the thing is that all of those places are far enough away that the gas I would spend would cost more than coinstar fees. I live kinda on the western outskirts of the metropolitan area, not so much in the city.

Suprised there isnt a credit union somewhere around. what volume are you searching at a time

I average about 1000 a week in nickels and about 200-300 in pennies. Then I throw in whatever I come up with for halves. Some dimes every now and then. I really only worry about pennies and nickels since you can't edge check. Sounds like these coinstar gift cards will help to alleviate the pressure a little bit. I checked the offers in my area and it says that Kroger is coming out here soon. Once that happens ill be able to do just about all my dumping there, because most of my family shops there and gift cards should be easy to swap for cash every week.

I'll be spending most of that on groceries. Between my household, my parents household, and my cousins, we easily clear 1000 in groceries a week. Im talking like 20+ mouths gobbling up everything in site lol.

Another option is to sell the giftcards on eBay. Do a little brousing and you'll find that most of them sell for dang near face value! My wife & I are Diet Coke addicts. I keep the codes & redeem them for Nike Giftcards that I sell on eBay. I keep the cans too & cash them in 2x/yr. I bought some sweet PCGS coins for my collection last year w/ only giftcards & recycling can $.

Your loss due to Ebay/paypal fees would be significantly higher than the 9.8 percent from the coinstar. Ebay has become a joke/scam for selling. Chances are, what ever you are selling, they are making more profit from it than you and that's assuming you are making a profit at all.

with ebay and paypal fees it comes to around 12.5%, depending on your initial listing fees

I did one time when I was on a road trip and had a bunch of halves to dump. I have a BOA account since they are about anywhere -- for dumping, but they had closed already and I didn't want to haul 30lbs of halves with me

So, I used a coinstar and got a Home Depot gift card for no fee. I knew I had to spend some money there anyways, so it worked out fine. I wouldn't normally do it unless I knew for sure I had to spend some cash at a place anyways.

It did work without a problem though.

Just curious as someone who sofar has stayed away from CS because of the fees. If you cash out to a GC to home depot/ Lowes etc go buy say some power tools over the price of the GC. Can you then return it a day later for your cash?
Retailers refund in the manner in which the purchase was paid - use a gift card to buy, get a gift card in return.

Depends on what and how you are selling. If you do a Buy it Now auction, it is 50 cents to list (min probably more with pictures and options) Plus up to 11% final value fees. Then another 3% (2.9% + 30 cents) fee from paypal. They have also done away with people paying other methods like Money orders, checks etc to force more people to use paypal. It is very possible that you end up paying 15%+
