Hi Don, I chatted with you years. I used to detect with Colonial Kirk. You are one of the Pros...Nice to see your still at it....Question for you is, if these coins were struck one at a time. Why would they strike this one Twice and so off center. You can clearly read " INDE "on both strikes.......
Nice one!!!

Very interesting find. Assuming these were made on a twist press, maybe the coin was slightly pressed, realigned, then completed. I don't know but it looks like an error

Think they fall under the title ah --- "STUFF" Happens :) I have a Hibernia like your CT, seen a few others double struck that far off. If I can find the correct reason I will post it, or someone else chime in, stomach too full of Turkey to think right now. :) OK, Here is one referenced statement on double strike of a State Copper. " Double-struck coins exhibiting a significantly off-center strike are much less common and bring a consderable premium when the change hands" (amongst collectors) No solid explanation given, but one explanation is the first strike was off center thus they restruck the coin with it more properly aligned the second time. Often the last strike will show the most detail, but not always................

Thanks Don and Scrappy, That makes total sense that the first strike off center, then they realigned it...... Thanks Fellas.

Finding a double struck early copper is fairly uncommon. I do have one, a George III halfpenny double struck on both sides. It's far from having sharp detail but no heavy corrosion and clear what is going on.
