I find chain links and hooks, oxen shoes, yoke hardware and cowbells, but this is my first complete chain with hooks. An isolate buried in the forest floor. Obviously functional and lost, crude handmade manufacture looks quite old. I left it stashed in the woods but really appreciate seeing a working tool. It came from an area which had a full working farm on an 1830's map, but was first settled in the 1670's. Saw a lot of chunky nails and iron today, including this hinge with large square nails still attached.

I have hauled dozens of log chains home and would definitely have carryied that one out. You're right, it is hand forged, but the hooks aren't made for dragging logs. It must have served some other purpose on the farm. Maybe someone else will know. You gotta go back and bring that chain out.
