Confederate H.M.A. Button (Updated w/ Cleaned Photo)

:hello: If you saw the post yesterday, my good friend Alan had come to town to dig with us and we had a great time together. Alan decided to stay one more night and hunt with us again today, so we went out to a different site... Since I've been digging with Josh (Sentinel), nearly every hunt we've gone on we've made the comment, "man, I'd love to get an H.M.A. button today." Today was that day. It's bittersweet because I know how badly the both of us have wanted to dig one, and part of me wishes it was him that had dug it. :-\ We continued to search the area in hopes that another was nearby. We came up with several more buttons, but unfortunately no more H.M.A.'s... This is a Confederate button and was only made in the vest size (17.2mm).. This button has a lot of remaining gilt that can be seen when holding it, but is difficult to see in the pictures. The cleaning process will be a slow one, if I decide that's the route to take. HH Jeff

Here is some info on the button and the academy
"Button depicts a building with "HMA", this is believed to be Hampton Military Academy, a very small cadet school operating before the Civil War, in a single building which burned in 1861. Two part convex button, school coat or vest size. Albert SU163, TiceVAS273

Thank you Monkeyboy, was hoping it had all the gilt left but I like the gold shadow ;D

Thanks to the rest of you for the kind words, and Antiquarian, the value is somewhere in the $500-600 range I'd guess :icon_thumleft:

Thank you fellas :icon_thumleft: As I said before, it would have been nice to end up with most of the gilt, but it is what it is and could have turned out a lot worse ;D

I really do envy you with those nice buttons. I have dug hundreds of buttons but very few that didn't fall apart when picked up. The area I hunted was hell on buttons and coins. I haven't had much time for dirt diggin in the last few years but will start again this fall. You have a super hunt and post and a BANNER vote from me.
