Cool scraper

Scrapers have never fascinated me much. Of course I pick them up, but normally find them again in the glove box of my truck or boat. Today, while working on a big machine, that had me stumped, I stepped away for a minute. While gathering my thoughts and patients, I reached in my coat pocket. I felt a rock, and pulled this out.



























My coat pocket is another refind frequent. I washed it off, and was just awed by it. I still can't figure out what this scraper has, that others lack. I think the appeal is in the tough lithic and the wear on it. I think the lithic is greenstone. If I'm correct on that call, that is listed as an unknappable lithic. While this piece isn't highly knapped, the serrated edge is just perfect. The jagged blade is still sharp enough to cut, yet it outlines a perfectly smooth worn stone. I guess this scraper has managed to hold its function as well as its wear. Just as a pocket knife of high quality will today.

Scrapers are my favorite tools/finds. I love the way you put it in prespective. I cant spell for crap,,use phonics!

I have to agree with you on that tool. Something about the way some are made to just fit in the hand. I have one here on my desk I cant put away. Just a cool piece of flint when found but the more I look at it the more I am amazed at its craftsmanship. I also have a green stone one somewhere. Now I shall want to find it. Thanks LOL

Thanks for the compliment! I wish I could spell better myself. I have found, unlike riding a bicycle, writing must be maintained. If not, it can fall apart, and fast. T-net has helped me regain some of my writing skill. To some people's dismay, I'm sure. Lol!

nice nc.im not sure about it being greenstone,looks more like an iron ore type rock to me.dont hold me too it but i think this is greenstone

Maybe basalt or ironstone.

Actually I thing ironstone is ferruginous quartzite. Don't think it's that.

It is a harder stone than most flaked pieces I find. I really do not believe it would be knappable. It has the density and durability of my axe head. I'll post it again.



But the color is off a shade or two. It also reminds me of the lithic of this Celt bit. Once again color problem.



Either way, all of these are hard stones. Thanks fellas for helping me. If you have any more possibilities, throw them at me!!

Yes Viking, the majority of my finds are in fact green rhyolite. The scraper is far denser it seems. This little adze/gouge is the same lithic as the scraper. The raggedy point is green rhyolite. Correct me if I'm wrong.

You're guess is as good as mine, maybe better. Some east coast materials are just hard to I.D. That Ryolite is much nicer than the variety I find up here. I don't think I have heard of chipped or flaked Greenstone before, but this link says they do exist. And yea I know this site basically sucks, but sometimes it has some useful info. As for the Greenstone triangle, not sure if it is an artifact or not. I have found a few of them in the same areas I find Savannah river points, they seem to show some sings of being used with dinged corners and flat edges.

That is why it is so outstanding. Savannah river greenstone is an unknappable stone. Notice the pieces I posted. The reduction flakes are large and show no detail. It's normally a polished hard stone. If you study the triangle, natives considered that a majestical shape. From what I have read, triangles were found at ceremonial sites. It makes sense to me that they would worship the triangle. Triangular points provided their food. Life, one could say, is provided by the triangle. According to my reading, the triangle was also the passage to the after life. The triangle was placed on the grave. The spirit or soul would enter the base, and be sent up through the peak. How credible my source was?? I can't say.

Being that this is a water find, I think the iron would be pitted from rusting out. Just my guess??

I find a lot of the green rock and it was used here in this certain area in artifacts... Anyways I was by water and came upon a round super thin piece as round as a dinner plate 1/4 inch thick..I did not even think and thought it was natural and flung it like a frisbee. Did not think and as soon as it left my hand skipping across the water I was like ohhh $%#@$% I bet that was something ! lol
