Well all I can add to that is that it is Italian.

Too bad that it's holed. Interesting find though.

gives it a little personality. Personally have never seen one before and when i saw the gold color shining out of the reject tray i jumped at it

I cant seem to figure what it is. The reverse is odd.

Probably the U stands for uno "1". Don't know my Italian coins but just guessing here.

Re: coolest thing i've ever found in a reject tray

Likely it was a token/medal of some kind, I'm still trying to do some searching on it but I've come across this in a forum (no pun intended)

http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?action=printpage;topic=72793.0

Which appears to be your coin, but there seems to be no positive identification.

I've found this: http://coins.delcampe.net/item.php?...ken=sslLogin_ffa009876c6d854bb0fc4cc1aa6809e8

Its your coin at a European auction site, nothing interesting about it other than its holed and a medal/token of some kind.

Its a token or medal, but the weird thing is, I don't know what the U would signify. There doesn't seem to be any major life event in 1889 so the date with the reverse design seems a bit odd to me. But there doesn't seem to be much information on the web...

Its definitely not an italian coin that was for circulation. The obverse appears similar to the 20 lira coin, but the reverse is totally different. My guess is it was a token or medal for some sort, perhaps bolted to something? It is stylized after a real coin so I imagine the reverse had to be different to avoid legal problems at the time.

"This is some type of medal but I have not seen it listed in any medal or token site.

I think this is a jewelery medal not an official one but the back has a "Crowned U" this is the official monogram of the the last king of Italy Umberto.

It may have been a souvenir medal but I have not seen any."
