I detect the history: I've visited archives up & down the entire US East Coast, Bahamas, Jamaica, Kew, The Hague, etc. Have yet to go to Seville or S.American archives.

Last nights show was the best so far :)

Agreed. It had everything. Whether you think it's a bunch of hooey or not, it looked like an outer-space scene when the 3 divers had to go adjust the metal detector on the sub. That was one of the coolest things I've ever seen on the screen. And suddenly they're sluicing with makeshift gear. That was fun. And skeptical or not, seeing the old planks was a treat.

The show, no matter how fictional it may or may not be, sure packs a lot of the very things that draw most people in to the adventurous world of treasure hunting.

Has there ever been an instance of finding gold dust on a shipwreck? A colonial shipwreck?

The solid gold table: I believe that started with the 1502 shipwreck of Bobadilla's flagship, El Dorado, in the Mona Passage. Also and variously, the "golden pig", a huge nugget.

It's as if they took a lot of "sexy" treasure ideas and pasted them into a script just for the attractiveness and appeal to the gullible in order to make a series to maximize their "success".

No, and there are so many reasons why one would not.

Xaos you are wrong. Odyssey Marine Exploration found gold dust on the SS Central America wreck and successfully recovered gold dust from the wreck. There are other wrecks where gold dust has been recovered. The salvage companies are doing it in Alaska right now.

I asked the question.

That's not colonial. I've read no accounts where there has been gold dust on board or the manifest. The usual practice was to melt it down into ingots/bars.

Colonial wreck and context of the answer are the operative words here.

gold dust

We found small amounts of gold dust on the Whydah It had been carried in leather pouches which had completely deteriorated. The dust settled on the clay substrate where almost all artifacts settled quickly, we even found .50 bullets concreted to 1717 cannons.

That is certainly plausible on that wreck, and associated with a debris pile.

Finding random gold dust scattered about on the ocean bottom, well. About as plausible for diving with a pin pointer on a large mag hit. (and missing the target by a couple of hundred feet horizontally and vertically)

Hey, they did find a deck prism with a detector so why not gold dust on the sandy bottom!

Au_Dreamers is 100% correct... Gold dust was found on a 1715 Fleet wreck (Rio Mar site) and small gold nuggets have been found (from which particular Wreck I’m not sure yet) by Golden Sands Beach area ([emoji23]... appropriately named)...

I am still shaking my head on that one. So how in the world did they find the prism with a metal detector? Do you know what I get a kick out of? They find something and in seconds know what it is. They are very shall I say “intimate” with shipwrecks. Must be pretty good at their jobs. Maybe they have “period era” specialists behind the scenes. I use to enjoy that show. Not until I came here, did I become a “ doubting Thomas” haha. An old friend of mine (friends now over 32 years) once told me “ your goal in diving, should be to get to a point where others pay you to dive” Maybe Miklos figured that out at $30000.00 an episode. Hehehe

I’m watching a show called Expedition Unknown. They are diving the fleet. Does anybody know Greg Bounds? He’s leading this show. They are claiming one ship of the fleet went far north of Sebastian. With Information from National Archives of Cuba, they are headed north on a boat named The Big Easy. They are currently running a mag. Now diving their hits. Vis obviously sucks. They found a cannon........coming back later

There are some people on that show with extensive knowledge of colonial Americas shipwrecks. Most of the actual shipwreck material found on the show is material that those "experts" have found before.

More "made for TV" on that show than the two more debated Oak Island and Cooper's put together.
