copy of letter to my legislator hope i'm not the only one.

Please see this link if you are unaware of the law changes as of 5-11-08.

http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/ORG/LAND/parks/other/metaldetect.html

State Parks, Powers of the Department, 27.01(2)(j) and 27.01(2)(m), and Field
Archaeology, 44.47

As do many other persons living in Wisconsin, I enjoy the outdoors. Wether
it be hunting, fishing, or anything else that involves quiet and tranquility. I
have been a metal detector for many years. Much as hunting and fishing has been
a family recreation for so many people, metal detecting has been that for me. I
have been free to roam woods, beaches, lakes, and anywhere that was not a
manicured area. Apparently, this has come to an end with little or no public
input.

Why this drastic change in law? Has this been a major public concern? Enough
of a concern to strip myself, my family, my friends of their right to use state
land for recreation? If I find a penny from 1958 is that really an
archaeological find?

Some people call metal detectorists "treasure hunters". In the back of our
minds, we want to find "the big one". It could be coins, or jewelry, or
anything that has some sort of significance. Maybe even something that would
make us well known. Is that any different than the "big game hunters"
searching for a trophy buck or bear? Is it any different than the "trophy
hunter" fishing to catch the big walleye or musky?

Metal detectorists are striving to keep our state history alive by
researching, sharing, and sometimes finding very important keys to the history
of Wisconsin. How many of these keys may never be found because of unfair
restrictions placed on the public? How many tons of garbage will not be removed
from the lakes, or forests, or parks? How many people will not get the thrill
of finding something that has not been seen for one hundred years and may have
never been seen again if it was not for them?

I would like to know how you voted on these changes in the law. I would also
like to know the reasoning for your vote. This statute blind sided myself and
the rest of the detector community. We would like to see it repealed with the
same swiftness and it was put into law.

Thank you for your time.

I, for one, don't like it at all.

I've been MD'ing for 30 years or so, and this must be new.

What are we gonna do? >:(
