Cornfield / Spanish Silver

Got permission to hunt grounds around a 5000 sq ft home built in 1900. The owner is selling as the house has been empty for a couple of years. She asked if we would wait till she got someone to cut the grass before we did around the house. We said no problem and asked if we hunt the cornfield attached to the property until the farmer who leases the property plows and plants. She said no problem but I don't think you'll find much.

Right off the bat started to find buttons, cut nails, bricks and pieces of pottery. Thinking there might have been a house in the field at some point. Only found 2 coins but they were goods one. First one was an 1805 Large Cent, the date and most of the details of the front of the coin wore off while it was in the pouch, must have been rubbing, but the back isn't bad.

The second coin turned out to be better. It's my first Spanish Silver!!!! Appears to be a 1776 1/2 Reale. Pretty worn but it was nice enough for me to to do a little silver dance right there in the middle of the field. It was a great day.

Congrats on your first colonial silver coin. Now that you've broken through that barrier hopefully the floodgates will open up for you. I'm betting you'll find another one in that field or in the yard. That c1900 house may have been built on top of a much older foundation which was common practice. One of my best sites was in the yard and field surrounding a c1914 home that had been built on a foundation dating to 1635 according to my research. That was quickly confirmed when my first 3 targets were colonial era. Good luck hitting that spot.

Thanks Bill, I think you may be onto something, started doing some additional research and found 1857 map that appears to have house on the site but need to do some additional research. Wish me luck.

Turns out that the field gave up two pieces of silver. Was going through some of the junk and other items and decided to rinse one of the spoons that was encrusted in dirt. Turns out it was sterling silver, bent up, but sterling none the less. It also appears to have the initial "H" in script engraved on the handle.

Maybe if it stops raining I can hit the field one more time before the farmer plants this weekend. HH
