could it be a sounding weight for depth or for fuel measurment??

here are some pics of one of the items from surfchurch spin – several think it is asounding weight for checking water depth – the end would have been filled withtallow or beeswax…..called lead line weight.


Withthe strong smell of diesel oil (still) –maybe it was used for fuel tankmeasurements??

Max is it lead? That smell can also be nitrates I have an old exploding whaleing harpon that is over 100 yrs old and still smells like diesel.

If it is brass I don't think it is a sounding weight . Could it be battery related remember the old dry cell that had carbon core? I have found many sounding weights and they were all lead.
