I see a Hard Times Token theory was suggested, but the details point toward a standard cent. Besides that, those tokens were struck just the same as large cents on quality planchets. Coins break like the one you found when they're cast, explaining your counterfeit theory. They also break like that when they're subject to intense heat. My thought is this coin was perhaps in a house fire.
