Hello all! I was walking in a nearby creek today near Santa Cruz, Ca with a friend who is an east coast weather refugee and an artifact hunter and found this. He had no sooner said how great it would be to find a point out here when I spied this. I haven't found artifacts since I was a kid back east and I don't know if this is an artifact. He said it looked like a weight of sorts. It is very symmetrical and the groove is very uniform. It was found about 3-4 miles inland and weighs 6-7 pounds. I'd love some input. Thanks everyone. show us close ups of the groove. I have some coastal weights but nothing like that one.

Here are some closer pics. It doesn't look worked more in relation to the rest but the whole thing looks pecked all over. Very interesting rock for sure. If I'd found it I'm sure I would of pondered what it might of, could of-been, or was for quite a while. I'm glad you took more pictures of what could be called a groove, because I saw your post earlier today and had the same desire as "unclemack". To me the so- called groove doesn't look man made . However, you only showed two of four shots I'd like to see of the groove. I can certainly imagine that it could have been used as a hammerstone or an anchor weight for a fish trap or such but the constriction on your rock, at least in the pictures, to me looks natural, albeit unusual. Having said all that, I know "nothing" about trap or net weights in your particular area. I'm looking forward to anything unclemack may have to say.

for your area this is what i would expect to see. A full and obvious groove on a fairly round stone.

Thanks y'all for the input. Probably just a interesting shape to a rock. I think I'll turn it into an artifact by using it for something for a while then I'll chuck it back into the creek for someone else to find in a few thousand years.
