You found a sleigh bell and a beautiful one at that. While a crotel bells would have been worn on an animal (usually in europe, and for all intent and purpose are similar) these are sleigh bells over here, and were strung on leather so people would hear the sleigh coming. (santa makes me correct the term or I get coal :) They are always wonderful and favorite finds!

for the most part you are right and wrong at the same time
a sleigh bell would have had two slots in the top (an x pattern ) while a cortel bell has only one
both were used has bells on animals and the reigns the bell i have is a cortel bell due to the shape (sleight bells were more round) and was used on leather strap (the figure 8 wire was used to hold it to the strap)
at lest this is what i have seen from looking up the bells on google

Crotal bell, or Sleigh bell; still a great acquisition for $0.25 :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

Yeah, that UK site is a good authority on the bells. I always associate them with 18th Century sites here in the Mid-Atlantic, so your bell may be older than you think!

Beautiful, intact crotal bell. I found one similar with chain link still attached

Re: crotal bell early to mid 1800's?

To suggest that the term "crotal bell" is never used of American bells, by Americans knowledgeable about such bells, may be a bit of an overstatement, as evidenced by the following page from Classic Bells, recommended above as a source of information:

http://www.classicbells.com/info/Crotal.htm

"A typical crotal made by North American and British manufacturers has one or more throats (slits) cast or cut into the outer half of the bell."
