Hi everyone,
My wife found two Crotal Bells today on our hunt, and I'm curious if anyone has any information on the make or age of them. They have a design on them and say NO 4, which I'm guessing is the size. They were found at a house built in 1900, but that doesn't always date stuff in the ground. Any help is much appreciated, I figured I'd ask here as I know there is a huge range of people with a lot of knowledge on many things here. Thanks in advance!

Nice bell.

Yes Numbers have to do with size also,
and Circa turn of the Century sounds about right.
the more Recent ones I've seen have Rivets connecting them to a strap

The vast majority of horse and sleigh bells were made from about 1845 to about 1920, perhaps as late as 1940. When in doubt, your bells are probably from this era.

& I'd guess they are Petal Bells

some nice old bells there, you have a U shaped shank with pedal design. 1790 to 1860s aprox.

Found two more today on day 2 of the same property. One is the same as the others, but still had a piece of iron. In the u shaped top, and one seems to be silver or maybe chrome plated and a bit smaller. I'm guessing maybe the silver one is a bit more modern because of the top.

Love finding the crotal bells. I've found a few and a lot of pieces that plow must of hit. The best part is cleaning the inside out and ringing it again for the first time in years. Some had iron balls in them and those are usually to corroded to get ringing again but some have a pebble I think in them and they will ring again. I've found very small and large ones. Mostly in fields where a farm once sat congrats on the bells.
