Re: Found a Bell

Looks like an earlier crotal bell, Kris. Have you tried to clean it up? I've found a few and they sound beautiful. I put mine in a tumbler. Here's an after pic:

Weldone on the crotal bell, I found one yesterday, I've had 13 altogether over the years they are
one of my favourite artifacts to find.

Sadly yours is not an older type of Rumbler or Crotal bell but a later Sleigh Bell (same category of bell from a British point of view, but these had a specific use & no loop)- the giveaway is the attachment on the top & the four holes.

The quote below is from the bottom of the page & its still not quite a match for the attachment type (which maybe be drilled or might be the rivetted, not the right word, but its not a loop see Third photo: for similar & explanation)

'Two bells from the mid 1800s (middle) have four large holes.'

So putting the two pieces of information together, yours is 1850s-1900.
