Cru'dad's time to shine - Our oldest Coin - WOW - Updated with a scan

I rang up our newbie detectorist friend & asked him if he wanted a couple of hours on the field we did well on last night. He said yes, so Dad & I sprung into action.
It was pouring down with rain most of the time. I picked the area & after 4 runs of nothing Dad started with his 'its not much good here, we will do better over there'. I shouted in my usual way 'you go where you want & I will carry on here'. He said grudgingly 'OK then I'll carry on'. I tell no lie, within 5 seconds of him starting the next run & with me a few paces ahead he shouts in a way that I knew was either the best Roman Silver EVER or it was a Celtic Gold! Second thought was true & we got to share the moment with our detecting friend (who ended up with 2 Roman coins, 1 of which is his best so far).
It was only 5 minutes ago I looked up the coin & realised its our oldest Coin ever!

Gallic War Type circa 60-50BC
Gold Stater
Gallo-Belgic E - imported from Gaulish tribe of Ambiani

Over 6g of soild Gold ;D
VA54-1
One of the oldest Coins your likely to find in the UK (40 years earlier than this one is the earliest)

We are on fire - 5 Gold Coins this year (1st one to Dad but in his usual style its a cracker!)

Just to put the icing on the cake, I have 8 Roman Bronzes which takes us to 1000 this year!
Very debased Roman Silver
Roman Brooch
Roman Pin Head

UPDATED:
Tried a scan but it wasn't much better :-\ Its better in the hand :o

Since there was only one does it fall under the treasure trove laws?

Thankfully not at the moment, unless we get more than 1 in the same area.

Kind of a bitter sweet situation, if you don't find any more you get to keep it but if there is another one you lose them both. I don't think I would hunt the area for a for another season, it would suck to have to turn in your oldest coin.

HH Charlie
Time has no bearing on whether its needs to be declared, so even if we get one next year within 'close proximity' we would need to report it. As we GPS these we would have valuable evidence as to how close they were.

And yes your right I would be gutted to hand it in but its the Law we abide by :icon_thumright:

I know you guys do everything on the up and up  but I don't know all the rules that you have to go by for the treasure trove law. If it doesn't matter that they were found at the same time or a year apart I guess you just have to take your chances, lol. What do they define "close proximity" as, a kilometer, 100 meters, etc...?

There is no definition of 'close proximity' under the terms of the Act. So its down to interpretation, and as far as I'm aware there have been no test cases.

Re: Cru'dad's time to shine - Our oldest Coin - WOW

UPDATE with internet research:
This type was produced in colossal numbers between about 60 and 50 BC, shortly before and during the Gallic War, and was almost certainly struck to pay troops fighting against Caesar. The lack of an obverse design certainly suggests that this coinage was struck in a hurry.

CELTIC, Northeast Gaul. Ambiani. Circa 100-50 BC. AV Stater (6.15 g). Blank / Abstract horse right; pellet-in-lozenge behind, pellets and ornaments above, pellet and ground line with pellet-in-crescents pattern below. D&T 238; Depeyrot, NC VI, 161. Good VF. Ex Davissons 19 (1 May 2003), lot...SOLD at auction on 16 Sep 09 for $750

CELTIC, Northeast Gaul. Ambiani. Circa 58-55 BC. AV Stater (6.08 g). Gallic War issue. Plain bulge / Large disjointed horse right; ornaments around. D&T 238; Depeyrot NC VI, 161; Scheers series 24, class II; De la Tour 8710; Van Arsdell 54-1; SCBC 11. Good VF. Estimate: 750... SOLD at auction on 20 May 09 for $1000

I only wish this to be true. Last year I got my first Celtic Gold after 20+ years detecting, Dad mirrored me with his his from the same tribe but only 10 years+ detecting. We both now have our second solid Gold (although I have a Gold plated type as well), but the likelyhood of another this year is :icon_scratch:

No, I'm happy for him. Sadly the newbie was working the opposite direction & missed it by 8 inches :-[ (because it was just outside his swing)
