Mr. Winter,
Recently a rectangular holed 2 reale coin sold on ebay. I've seen several detector finds on the forums and in articles that were holed. Were these holed as a means of carrying them so they wouldn't be lost or for jewelry? Has there been any research into the practice?

Very nice entry Mr. Winter.
Good to read of the detectorist's persistence and some of the possibilities of his finds relating to those civil events involving holed coins.

Very nice read! My feeling is most old holed coins like that are not just for modern jewelry contrary to much belief.

My guess is that most holed coins found from the time were strung to keep them together, it is less easy to lose a whole string of coins than a couple individual coins.

John,
In the Western Eastern Treasures 2014 Annual Silver and Gold magazine page 38 W E Annual 2014 J Bailey151.jpg , Jim Bailey posted a photo of a Philip V cut coin that was cut through a holed one reale coin. This coin adds evidence that holes were used for carrying and not for jewelry, at least in Jim's coin's case.

C4 members have studied this in the past and I believe articles exist. Several collectors specifically seek out holed coins for their historical significance.

If anyone wants additional info, PM me and I will provide some names of people you can contact on your own.

Bill Dancy recently had an article published in American Digger Magazine July-August 2015, titled Coins of the Commonwealth that is an excellent read on the various coins used in Colonial America, including holed coins. He has found and shows examples of holed cut Spanish silver coins, further illustrating the use of holes to secure coins on a string.
