I just returned from a quick day and a half trip to a central Va. spot. I got down into a low swampy area that was much dryer than normal, allowing me to hunt where I haven't in the past.....and that's where the relics were. It was a swamp mud bath, but I loved every minute.
I found a lot of bullets, some that would almost crumble to the touch, and also several nice fragments. The highlights were a round bottom section of a Hotchkiss and the intact Read Shell. The Read was entangled in the roots of a tree and took 30 minutes to get out. The shell has about 25% of the copper sabot missing, however it is one of the rare versions with the lead plug, used to fill the shell with balls.
I hate to wish for a drought in those parts, but if and when that happens..........
