I haven't been doing much detecting lately, but I got out the other night on a site I've hunted a couple times before. I decided to deal with the noise and go for some all-metal mode swinging. It paid off. I was able to sniff out a couple signals I missed. One of them was this cut Largie. Pretty cool. I've actually never dug a cut coin. The date is on the other half unfortunately. It's worn, but I'm pretty sure it's a Braided Hair, right? There's no line under the One Cent. How common are cut copper large cents, especially getting into Braided Hair years? I guess somebody really needed a half cent :) Anyway, good hunt. Happy to get out digging again.

That is cool and I can't recall ever seeing a US Large Cent chopped clean in two. Hmmm? Great piece of history with some serious character there mate.:headbang:

Hey Vermonter I am in Vermont also. There is something about this area and cut coppers. I even found a quarter of a copper a few weeks ago and have seen quite a few half coppers. What area are you in I am in central vt.

Nice braided cut half cent. As the others have said, cut coppers are a great find because they are so unusual. Since the braid-design LCs were the last ones before the currency switched to small cents, its a particularly interesting design to see cut. Must be an interesting story there somewhere.

Often wondered where the term "wheres my cut ?" came from. Maybe someone put in half the effort at work that day and got this in return! Very cool find these are the ones that leave you wondering. Congrats

Awesome find!! I found an 1848 large cent similar but not totally cut. I was wondering if there is a reason for these coins being cut, or if it was just some kid messing around? IMG_2843.JPG IMG_2844.JPG

It looks like the "mature head" type, minted between 1843 and 1856. Nice find, I have never found any cut coppers yet, too bad the date was the part cut though. It is probably cooler being cut in half, not something you find every day.
