Wife turns to me and says she wants to get a metal detector and check out our property here in rural Louisiana. Used to be an old train depot here in the 1880's and there are 3 old homesteads on our property from the 1800's as well. My wife also knows a lot of these old country folk and won't have trouble getting permission to search other possible areas and old home sites.

She has worked extremely hard over the years to put herself through college and med school while holding down a full time job. After that she spent the last 2 years working 12-20 hour shifts, all nights and weekends and wore out many pairs of shoes along the way. Now that she has established herself she has a better rotation of 4 days on and 6 days off, we can start enjoying life.

In all the 12 years we been together my wife never asked me for hardly anything. She wanted a car that ran to get her to school and work, a new pair of shoes every 3 months and food cooked when she got home. She never asked me for anything for Christmas, birthdays, etc. Now she out of the blue says she wants a metal detector and asked me to do some research and order her one.

I Googled around for top metal detector but as you can imagine every company would like to think they are the best. I come to you because I know that many of you have put in years of real world testing, research and for some of you it is your main hobby and you take it seriously.
I'm not looking for a beginner machine or something easy to learn. My wife is super smart, she can name off every bone and muscle in the body. She can pronounce medical words I can't even spell, lol. I'm pretty sure no matter the difficulty, if she puts her mind to it, she will learn to use it.

I just want to know what you would purchase today if money were no object. Let me identify the possible places she would be using it as well.
Mainly she will use it on old homesteads and rural Louisiana land. She may want to take it down south to the beach or to Florida when we go, but she won't be putting it in the water. Our beach trips are just a couple times a year so not a big priority. We probably won't ever go out west and hunt nuggets or anything like that. She has more of a historical interest than anything else.
I fully intend by the end of next week to order her the best machine I can find. I am just still shocked she asked for something and I'm determined to put the best in her hands. She never said no to me when I wanted a boat or an ATV, etc. I will never deny her anything in this life if it's within my power. I love her more than anything on earth an if she wants to detect something I'll be her chauffeur and personal digger, lol.

I have no experience with the CTX, but take a serious look at the XP Deus, it's an incredible machine. Before I got mine I was a little Leary about the wireless design with rechargeable batteries. After I got it in my hands, I can say this is just one of the strengths of this machine. I have gone several weeks without the need to recharge and that's hunting Saturday and Sunday every week. I can't tell you how impressed I am with the XP. When I tune it to a site before a hunt I am confident that I'm not missing a thing. I think I said it earlier in this thread but, I was so impressed I bought another for my wife. I think your wife will appreciate the ultra light weight in addition to the advanced features, which will enable her to hunt longer and enable your wife to grow with the machine.

OP, first thing you need to do right now, is have your wife train her arm with a 5lb dumbbell. lol that 3030 ain't light....

Yep, the first time I swung the 3030 I did so for like 4 hours. In 100' heat. Afterwards I went to get something to eat. Could nt even get my fryes to my mouth. LOL On the phone the next morning and ordered a pro swing. It works great and I can swing for a long time now.

I have a deus. I really like that machine. The only weakness I know is that it is not strong on the beach or in the water.

I haven't tested it in the water yet, but it did really well for me on dry and wet sand.

Bart at Big boy hobbies or Kellyco. Either is a great choice. The best choice is getting in to this hobby! It's great! Happy hunting and best of luck to your wife!

I agree with the XP Deus. It is ultra lightweight and cordless. The pleasure of using it is well worth it. The CTX 3030 is a fabled machine, but the pleasure will come after lots of pain.

I'm going with etrac. It's very versatile and has done good for me in relics and coins.

Yup. The Eagle SL II was a great machine. Just a bit dated on depth, and was never a good wet-salt-minerals machine. But other-wise a great machine !

Old thread but I had to jump in here, IMHO the Eagle II SL is the best detector Whites EVER made. I have owned MANY Whites detectors since 1981 including a MXT, DFX, and two other Eagle II SL's and currently own three Eagle II SL's (one of which is still brand new and has NEVER been assembled) a VX3 and a V3i ( which I bought new a couple months ago and have never got the opportunity to use yet) but of all the detectors I have owned I have never found one that can run with the Eagle. I bought the VX3 thinking I was upgrading but it doesn't compare to the Eagle, I can't wait for the weather to break because I want to see how the V3i stacks up against the Eagle. I have dug dimes several times at 10 to 11 inches with the Eagle II and have dug them as deep as 13" before, I will admit that I don't have a bunch of time with the VX3 (probably 40 to 50 hours) but so far I'm not overly impressed with it. I believe that it may be due to the time that I have using the Eagle II's (thousands and thousands of hours literally) and I am going to try to put a bunch of hours on the VX3 and V3i this summer.

One of my personal favorites too. I have thousands of hours and tons of silver with that machine. Once I got an E-trac though....the Eagle 2 SL90 gathered dust. It just can't compete in depth, stability in bad ground, and salt water beach hunting. The SL90 still has the best target I.D. of any machine I've used, except for bottle caps. The E-trac is much better at IDing those.

If you're going to go to the beach often enough, make sure you pick the one that works well in SALT water.

That's my biggest regret after saving a bit of money and buying a used Whites MTX. I went with the whites because of the SALT setting, thinking it would work well as a beginner machine for prospecting, relic and beach detecting. Had I known it was going to be awful on my california salt beaches, I would of just kicked in a little extra and made sure to get a machine that would perform well in salt. Sure it works fine in the dry sand, so the beachest aren't totally off limits. And I'm sure with enough practice I can make it sorta function in the highly mineralized california beaches I have here. But at the end of the day I do wish it had better beach functionality.

With that said. There is still PLENTY of me to do and learn about detecting that has NOTHING to do with even going to the beach. And I still feel overwhelmed at times just in the parks. I don't think I made a bad choice in my detector. If I stay in California and keep interested in this hobby, I'll just invest in a dedicated beach machine at some point.

This hobby isn't for everyone but it is addictive. No matter what you buy her she will probably end up buying several more at some point. The AT Pro is an awesome machine and waterproof to 10 feet. The Deus is super light and one can swing it all day without the fatigue associated with most detectors. It doesn't matter what machine you get her as long as its a name brand quality machine. It sounds like she has great places to go already so tell her to go slow, keep her coil low and listen to the signals. Good luck!
