Hi All,
I never expected to find one of these :o
Gotta say thanks to Mike at Woodland Detectors for recommending the
Coiltek 15 WOT,
It will pull new finds from your 'Hunted Out' sites.
This plate was really deep.
It will make a great centerpiece for my NH Militia Buttons :hello2:
My best find in a Looong Time.
See where it stopped the slug :laughing7:
thanks for looking & HH to Everybody
Putting a comparison pic of what I believe is the die match "Tall & sloppy U" style 501
everything looks to match especially the thin serif on top of the S
thanks Mr Ridgeway :notworthy:

sweet plate!
looks like it's in pretty nice shape for being in that mud for so long, too.

Great find Herbie!

I've found quite a few CW relics down here in VA, but somehow a US plate has always eluded me. Hope you make some more great finds at that site. HH ..... Bill

Thanks!!
It has no bends or significant dings, surprising, this mud is full of large rocks :hello2:
Just gotta wirebrush those stains off :laughing9:
The stamped brass face seems pretty thick.
I was in a state of shock when I saw it :o
Been a while since I got a good dig ;D

Great find Herbie! I get down to Virginia and West Virginia for some Civil War relic hunting from time to time, and I have dug three Confederate plates and a Volunteer Maine Militia plate, but like Bill, the US belt and boxplates have eluded me. So have the New Hampshire state seal buttons for that matter :laughing7:

Hey, looks like a silver quarter or button at 2:00 o'clock in your dirt shot :dontknow:

Hi Steve,
I had pulled the plate, scanned the hole again, backfilled, scanned again,
then placed it on the filled hole for the 'Insitu'.
no more metal there,
there is no water access here at low tide.
(the mud gets too deep, it has no firm substrate here)
It is sticky pasty thick muck, after a short time, your digger & coil are plastered, and most finds are not identifiable, I just put the clumps of mud in my pockets to clean later :laughing7:
I wrapped the plate in a piece of seaweed before pocketing...
Just before finding the plate I was approached by a man who used to metal detect,
we were discussing local CW finds, (his favorite era) and he brought up the 'Maine Militia Plate' (at the time we spoke, I had no finds to show him), I told him that I knew someone who had recovered one, (You!).
Soooo strange that I dug this ten minutes after.
Thanks and Best Digs to You !

Thanks for all your replies !!
I was really happy to get a prize, it's been a lot of diggin without much reward lately.
My best find in the last few days was a 1959 quarter, when cleaning that days finds
I knocked it off the edge of the sink, and it disappeared into some crack and now resides underneath my cabinets somewhere :tongue3:
Dawg, the plate was recovered in the same city, different site, as the trigger guard and the pile of NH Militia buttons.
thanks again And HH to everyone!

Nice One Will! You can tell its been in the mud a Long time because it looks good. The mud can leave minute pitting but leave it leaves brass looking nice and golden. Alot of

the Buttons I find in the muddy areas around here are IDENTICAL in color to that plate. Very nice snag my friend and I started thinking about it and you're right, that would

be a terrific centerpiece for those New Hampshires. It'll look good in a nice size Riker with Red or Blue Backing and the buttons around it. Send my a photo when you're done

with the display, I'd love to see it. :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:
