There are basically 3 mints Denver Philadelpia and San Francisco. SF only produces Proof sets these days but the other 2 produce the bulk of circulating coins today. There really isn't any magic to it. What you need to do is get yourself a Red Book coin price guide or check out PCGS on the web. I strongly recommend the red book for there is lots of good info.
