Well the roll is slowing down. Clearly I hit the best area in the first couple of days.

Still plenty of roman pottery including a nice piece of Samian Ware.

10 combined hours & 10 roman coins.

I would guess its a drop piece from smelting

It would be a good sign, but I think all the silver has been cherry picked off & I'm nearly out of the marked area.

I guess you have never worked for an archeology team in a dig in Canada. I have many times here in Holland, and we find wheelbarrows full of bits and pieces, sometimes truck fulls, really! All from one place. They are then all washed, and dried. When we guys get enough time we sort them first out by color, then by texture, then by thickness. Then we sit around and try to puzzle a couple of pieces together.

Sometimes you get lucky and find a few, sometimes even 3 or 4 pieces, but not always getting more than one or two complete pieces out of the stuff, most of the time none complete, but some halfway. Sometimes more, if the pottery was dumped whole or almost hole down a trash pit, but the most back then were just thrown into the canals and scatter. The pieces shown here have been turned so much even the ends are smooth, you could never get one to fit on an other.

Cru, I don't think you are slowing down at all, your button count is increasing. I have seen you have made a running total list, you know, how many hammered, how many roman.....etc. Do you have a running count on the buttons?

That's why I said "it would be cool to be able..." I fully realize the near impossibility of the endeavour...but thanks for the edumacation.

To me...because I am pretty sure that the Roman empire did not extend to Nova Scotia...that piece of red pottery would be a prominant feature in a super cool Roman display

Is Samian the same Samien Pottery? Your Samian [samien] pottery seems alot thicker and far brighter colour than the second century style.Do think you it may date later or early? The reason i ask i couldn,t find an example of that type in pottery books. Pottery is one of my passions
