Targets appear deeper if:

1. The target signal is weaker than a coin-sized object
... which is because:
a. The target is actually smaller than a coin-sized object
b. The target is less conductive than a coin
c. Iron truncates the signal (spreading it horizontally)

Are you completely centered over the target? The farther away from center you are, the deeper it shows the target to be.

I've used the Etrac for a few years now, but I quit using the depth meter after about a month.... you can usually tell by the sound of the target it's depth and size. When I was watching the depth meter years ago, I also found it to be inaccurate and really only a guideline.

I've found the depth reading could be off as much as two to three inches for reasons explained above during scanning in any mode/pattern. My E Trac seems to be very accurate while in pinpoint. Locate your target and check depth while pinpointing. see how that works for you.

Depth reading is always most accurate in pinpoint because that is when you are able to center directly over the target.
