As my season is quickly coming to a close, I have invested quite a bit of time the last couple of days. First stop on Monday was an old park in a tiny town about 30 miles from me. I was told that nobody had been there for many years, so we gave it a shot. 10 steps away from truck and my first target turned up a beautiful 1881 IH penny!! I told my hunting buddy that we were in the right spot!! We hunted this park for 3 more hours and never found so much as a wheat penny!! Later we found out that somebody had been there a few days before us and had spent two days hunting the park...
Yesterday started put at a property that I knew nothing about, but Ed, my hunting friend, had hunted once before. We didn't find any coins, but I did turn up a few nice relics and the Palmolive soap token!! On to our next property...an old farm house that was built in 1859. We hit the yard hard, but during the first hour, not one coin did we find!! I was in disbelief!! After talking to owner, we found that the house had been jacked up, basement dug out, and new block foundation laid under it in the late 70's. The dirt had been spread around the prime areas!! We continued to hunt the outlying parts of yard when I hit a real jumpy tone at 7-8". I started to walk away, because the tone was indicative of junk, but I decided I should dig it any way..am I glad I did!! At about 9" down I found my first Large Cent!! After light brushing the date was 1845!! I found two more wheat pennies after that, but that was it for the property...even Ed didn't find anything there. Today we are heading out to two new permissions...both properties are on an 1861 plat map, so I'm hoping for some more old coins today!!
