all metal is the most powerful mode --most depth * --however it will pick up "all metal' -- to look solely for jewelry try "jewelry" mode --- the delta 4000 has a "numbers" id system -- gold items will generally run from about mid 50's(56-58) for 10 K up to about high 60's (68) for 18 K --depth can play a factor --as deeper items can not ring up as well

you can run in either all metal or "jewelry" mode * -- be advised you will find trash in both modes * since aluminum items and gold item have a very similar "electronic conductivity levels" which is how any detector sorts out what metals it thinks it has found one from another. --- all metal mode will get "more depth" --but jewelry mode will sort out "iron and some "junk"--the main thing is to watch the display "numbers" no matter which mode you use. --the sweet numbers you are looking for fall in between 56 to 68 * that's the gold range 10 k to 18 K --although giving a little lee way on each end might help if its extra deep --say 54 to 70
